Crom Sunday School Building
Crom Church was built in three stages from the 1840`s to the late 1880`s by the Earls of Erne. Originally overseen by their personal chaplain, it came under the stewardship of the Parish of Kinawley in the 1910`s. In the 1980`s when the building transferred from the ownership of the Earls to the National Trust, Sunday school would have held with Mrs Darling in the vestry room towards the front of the church.

The Church building never had toilet facilities within the main fabric or nearby vicinity. A number of ongoing developments in the 1990’s and early 2000’s suggested these should now be built along with upgrading the Sunday School facilities. These developments included the growth of visitors to Crom Estate, increase of the lakes as a tourist destination, ongoing church services and funerals, European Heritage open days and an increase in weddings due to links with Crom Castle’s West Wing. At a meeting in 2002 with parishioners the National Trust suggested using the lower car park area outside the grounds as a possible location. Once this new option had been agreed, the different parties set about completing the legalities which at times moved very slowly due to building restrictions within an area of scientific interest. The construction finally commenced in the Summer of 2019 and this picture gallery shows the progress from then to the building’s completion in January 2020.

A big thank you to the generosity of many alongside some extensive and novel fundraising efforts. As a building of charitable status, the construction took place VAT free which was most helpful. The Parish of Kinawley & Holy Trinity provided some funds also. Other sources of finance were the Church of Ireland Priorities Fund. It is anticipated that a ball held in Crom Castle in March 2020 will contribute to closing costs. A finishing celebration and dedication of the new Sunday school room and toilet facilities is planned for April 2020.
